004 – Front Axle and Steering Parts for VW – Volkswagen
Everything in the front suspension of Volkswagens is in the 004 group. In the early Beetles and erly Buses and everything that was rear wheel drive the front suspension was limited to wheels, tires, spindles, springs, struts, and steering gear from the steering wheel all the way down to the road wheel, there are tie rods, and tie rods end, track alms, with ball joints or king pins and gear driven steering gears which later warped into rack and pinions. Steering gears were generally mounted directly in line with the driver and as they stayed in one position all the time. When they wore out the center of the gear and this could be compensated by tightening the adjustment screw, but as you tighten the adjusting screw they would wear more and more and eventually they would become unrepairable and would have to be replaced. Later cars switched to rack an pinion which makes it a little more comfortrable driving and has less problems. Each systems transfers the power of the force to the tie rods, tie rod ends and thus to the spindles and the control arms through tie rod ends and ball joints.
The very early cars had king and link pins in place of ball joints, but they went away before the early 70s.
We have various used steering wheels for many different cars and they can be a beauty modification to make your aincient car a little more modern. We also have horn links so when you smash on your horn you get some noise out when someone drivers out in front of you.
This section includes all the front springs from tourque bars to coil springs and their related spring plates, strut bearings, and struts, and all the strut absorbers to take the roughness out of the ride. Speaking of roughness, many times the ride of the car can be improved by resetting the tire pressure all the way around to the original Volkswagen specs. In some cases, owners have installed giant wheels on something like a Beetle and overinflated the tire pressure, which gives you a harsh ride and this overinflated tire pressure can cause shutter in the front suspension.
