002 – Fuel Tank & Exhaust System Parts for VW – Volkswagen

Fuel tanks both gas and diesel and their related parts including gas caps, gas lines, sending units, etc, fall into the category of fuel tanks or gas tanks or diesel tanks. The earliest tanks up until the mid 1980s were all made out of steel, and thus, there was a rust problem. In the 1990s and beyond, all gas tanks made by Vollkswagen and almost everybody else are made out of hard plastic. The advantage of this hard plastic is that it doesn’t rust out and it is also flexible in a crash. In a crash a plastic gas tank on a Volkswagen takes a huge amount of force to make it spring open or leak. The earlier gas tanks could pop a seem in a severe crash.

All exhaust systems fall into the same number category. From the exhaust manifolds on the side of the head, to the downpipe from the exhaust manifold, to the front pipe, to the intermediate pipe, and the muffler. Some Volkswagens used premufflers and also catralytic converters and flex pipes. Flex pipes and flex joints were introduced in the 1980s and at first were made out of corrigated stainless steel and later became stainless steel mesh. If your muffler system is starting to make noise or you suspect you have an exhaust leak, the very first place to look is this stainless steel mesh, as it takes all of the flexing of your exhaust system. Your engine rocks back and forth with each firing of the piston and the balanace of the muffler system is semi-rigidly bolted to the body so there must be a flex someplace and this flex takes place in the flex joint. All muffler systems have various gaskets and hangers and rubber hangers and clamps, bolts, and many systems have tail pipes extensions.
